Veterinary charity in plea for equipment for Mission Morocco

Help the Street Animals of Morocco (HSAM), a Brighton-based charity founded to help street cats and dogs living in one of the largest cities in Morocco, Essaouria, has appealed for veterinary equipment for its next mission, which takes place from 19-27 November 2011.

Foldable wire cat carriers; suture material Vicryl 2-0; sterile drapes and gloves; i/v catheters and surgical instruments are all urgently required to help the team of veterinary volunteers carry out vital work treating and neutering street animals in the city.

HSAM was founded by vet nurse Claire Sedgwick and her partner Rob White in 2006 following their first visit to Essaouria. They realised how many of its street cats and dogs were in poor health and wanted to do something to help. Its work is supported by leading veterinary pharmaceutical company Dechra Veterinary Products, which provides the organisation with its range of products free of charge. HSAM’s most recent mission to Essaouria took place during May 2011.

Claire Sedgwick commented: “Yet again we had a very busy time, treating more than 100 kittens for diseases including calicivirus and herpesvirus and carrying out other procedures including dentals, amputations and parasite treatments.

Neutering is a priority as it’s the most effective way to control the ever increasing population of street animals. This time we focused on cats, neutering over 50 animals during our week long stay.

For me, a particular highlight was finding a cat we’d treated in November 2010 looking fit and well. We’d had to remove one of her eyes last time as it was ruptured. This year we were able to neuter her. While life on the streets is tough even for healthy animals, it was rewarding to see her in such good shape.

We rely on donations and support to continue our work and are particularly grateful to Dechra. The help we’ve received from the company over the last three years has ensured that we can offer safe, high quality treatment to the animals in our care.

Our next mission – our eighth – is fast approaching, however, and we’re in desperate need of equipment to help us treat the maximum number of animals during our visit. We’d be grateful for any offers of help.”

Bob Parmenter, Managing Director or Dechra Veterinary Products, commented: “We have huge admiration and respect for the work Claire, Rob and the rest of the HSAM team do. The suffering of many of the animals they treat is great and they are the only source of help. Their neutering work is also absolutely vital.

The team at Dechra has been delighted to support HSAM for the last few years and we look forward to continuing to do so.”
